The Greater Côa Valley Expedition

The Greater Côa Valley like you have never seen it before. On this amazing expedition we’ll take you on a journey of discovery of the whole course of the River Côa, right from its spring all the way up to the mouth in the Douro, travelling along some of the most beautiful landscapes you will ever see. Along the four days of this trip, we’ll explore the whole region and discover the various ecosystems and dimensions of the Côa River, with visits to the rewilding areas, birdwatching and immersive cultural activities. Depending on the weather, the number of people and the customer’s preferences, accommodation on this expedition will be in local B&B’s or at the Wilder Camp, where you can experience what it feels like to sleep under the stars. All meals are included in this programme, whether it’s the hearty breakfasts, the fancy picnics in the countryside (with local products) or the dinners at the accommodations or local restaurants. Available for groups of 4 or 8 participants, in one or two vehicles respectively. Programme subject to prior confirmation. Itinerary

Day 1 - Arrival and reception of participants. Dinner and accommodation at Casa de Vilar Maior. Day 2 - Visit to the source of the river Côa (short walking route). Visit to the Alfaiates Dam (photography, nature observation) and Alfaiates village. Passage over the Sequeiros bridge and picnic-lunch. Walking tour to the Carapito Valley rewilding area (photography, nature observation). Interpretative tour to Vilar Maior. Dinner and accommodation at Casa de Vilar Maior. Day 3 - Departure from Vilar Maior. Itinerary through Paul de Toirões rewilding area, Malhada Sorda and Freineda villages. Guided tour to Castelo Mendo. Picnic-lunch in Castelo Mendo, with products from the Wild Côa Network. Walking tour to Ermo das Águias rewilding area (photography, nature observation). Dinner by Chef Miguel Veiga, from the Wild Côa Network. Accommodation at Casa da Praça, Pinhel. Day 4 - Visit to Pinhel historical centre and the Pinhel Cavacas Factory. Visit to Faia viewpoint and to Cidadelhe. Picnic-lunch with products from the Wild Côa Network in Cidadelhe. Visit to the Côa Museum and the Penascosa rock engravings. Closing meal in Ervamoira vineyard. Accommodation in Foz Côa. Day 5 - Departure.

Through our activities, we are financially supporting habitat management and conservation actions, which promote the coexistence and return of wild species to the Greater Côa Valley, under the responsibility of Rewilding Portugal.
