Phantom of the Highlands - Dupont's Lark Photography Tour

Join the ultimate quest to photograph one of Europe's most elusive birds. The Dupont's Lark, known as "the phantom of the highlands," awaits in the vast open plains of the Iberian Highlands - one of its last remaining strongholds. Experience the thrill of searching for Europe's most mysterious bird in the endless steppes of Molina, Maranchón, and Pozondón. The Dupont's Lark is a true ghost of the grasslands - incredibly difficult to spot and even harder to photograph. These ancient plains hold some of the last populations of this endangered species, making every sighting a precious moment. Beyond the phantom lark, you will discover why Spain is the ultimate stronghold for Europe's steppe birds. This journey offers outstanding opportunities to photograph a host of rare and iconic species. We will seek out the majestic Great Bustard, the world's heaviest flying bird, and the charismatic Little Bustard. We'll scan the plains for both Pin-tailed and Black-bellied Sandgrouse, as Spain holds nearly the entire European population of these species. The experience is completed by a superb supporting cast of other larks, including the Calandra Lark, Thekla's Lark, and Greater Short-toed Lark, creating a complete immersion into one of Europe's most threatened and unique avian communities. Each day brings new challenges and excitement as you explore different areas of the great Iberian steppes. Patient waiting, careful observation, and a bit of luck combine to create unforgettable wildlife photography opportunities in some of Spain's most remote and beautiful landscapes. This is not just bird watching - it's a true adventure for serious wildlife photographers and birders seeking one of Europe's rarest photographic prizes. Professional local guides specialized in steppe birds. Small groups for minimal disturbance. All accommodation, breakfast and dinners included. Suitable for experienced birders and photographers.

How your experience helps rewilding efforts

In an area where depopulation is a big problem, your trip makes a direct difference. We only work with local partners. This means your entire experience—from the travel agency and the restaurant to the guides and your lodging—comes from the region itself. This helps change the economic model and proves that nature-based tourism benefits everyone. A portion of your visit also directly funds habitat management and wildlife tracking. This supports the conservation projects of Rewilding Spain in the Iberian Highlands. Through guided tours and expert explanations, you become a rewilding ambassador. You'll share what you've learned and support conservation long after you go home. By choosing local businesses, your visit helps create a stable income for communities. This encourages them to actively support conservation efforts. Your participation shows that wildlife and natural landscapes have real economic value, giving local people a sustainable alternative to traditional activities that might harm the environment.
