Vilar Maior is a small village in the municipality of Sabugal, whose castle was built by the Kingdom of León (Spain) and definitively established as Portuguese property from 1297 onwards, the date of the signing of the Treaty of Alcanizes. On this visit we interpret a little of the social evolution of Portugal, which led to the desertion of the Mainland, as well as some particularities, to be noted: medieval games,engraved in the rock. Vilar Maior brings us even closer to Nature in its wildest state, as it allows us to visit a Rewilding Portugal property, Vale Carapito, where we can see Semi-wild horses from a native breed - Sorraia - and Nature in the process of self-restoration, thanks to all the efforts from Rewilding Portugal.

Programme

We arrive to the main square of Vilar Maior, where we start walking towards Vale Carapito property. On the walk, we address Portugal's inland desertion phenomenom, which created the oportunity for Rewilding in this region (30'). In Vale Carapito, we interpret the signs of rewilding and Nature restoration already visible, while also scanning for the horses and other wildlife (2h). In the end we walk through a very idylic road towards the castle of Vilar Maior, where we start the cultural part of the tour, walking down the village towards the starting point (1h30). *Note: There's the option of having lunch or a picnic inside the castle, negotiated separately.
